WAFDI organized a conference on Women’s Rights and Leadership in Iraq on October 25, 2009 at the Pomegranate Gallery in New York City. The idea was to bring Iraqi women voice to the international community and build support for their fight for their rights. Click here for full report of the event.
Carole Basri, WAFDI Executive VP, and Basma Fakri, WAFDI co-founder and President Emeritus, received invitations from Dr. Faleh Jabar, the director of the Iraqi Studies Institute in Beirut Lebanon to deliver lectures on Leadership and Women’s Issues. The program was scheduled for one week July 13-17, 2009 at the Lagos Center in Beirut, Lebanon. Attendees were young Iraqis from the government and civil society, 12 women and 15 men taking a two month certificate course. The training was a one-hour lecture per day on each subject (Leadership and Women’s Issues). Click here for full report of the event.
WAFDI is working with a targeted number of 30 women on basic job skills training and small home-based businesses. We provided a sewing training course at the
machines. We are now working on raising funds to build a workshop for the women inside the camp. The workshop will be a "Sewing factory" for the women, where they can produce clothes and other garments such as hospital gowns, sheets, curtains, etc., and then market their products directly to the public. This is a small business that is owned by the women for the benefit of the women. All the proceeds will go the women and their families. Click here for more project details.
