RURAL WOMEN ARE VITAL TO POST-CONFLICT RECONSTRUCTION

WAFDI organized a panel discussion on "Rural Women in Post-conflict
Reconstruction" at the UN Commission on the Status of Women (CSW 56th Session,
ECOSOC).

The event that took place on Thursday 1st March, 2012 was attended by
representatives from women organizations and UN agencies staff, as well as activists
from different parts of the world. Ms. Anne-Marie Goetz, UN Women advisor on
women, peace and security presented global lessons on the role rural women play in
post conflict reconstruction; Ms. Tania Chipata, YWCA representative in Zimbabwe
spoke about the experiences of rural women in post-conflict Zimbabwe. Ms. Magda
Gardenas Lopez, YWCA representative in Columbia, presented the Columbian
conflict experience on young women. Ms. Raya Barazanji, WAFDI board member,
spoke about funding civil society organizations to provide targeted programs to rural
women in post-conflict Iraq. Ms. Janet Beneshoof, President of Global Justice Center,
talked about Implementing hard law to ensure rural women’s rights.

The participants engaged in an interactive discussion on key actions for a better
future and creating an action plan. Their recommendations will be published in a
report soon and presented to the CSW. The panel was chaired by Ms. Zarin
Hainsworth WAFDI UN Permanent Representative Geneva. The event was co-
sponsored by the Widows Rights International and National Alliance of Women’s
Organisations.
